Must buy (part 2)

Just to remind you all that Wakefield’s finest band, The Research, released their long-awaited debut album Breaking Up today. It was CD of the Week in yesterday’s Sunday Times but appallingly ignored by Radio 1. What a review:

"Fifteen months after their first single, this Wakefield trio release their debut album, and it’s a corker. Emerging at a time when a handful of Britishh acts are wolfing down most of the oxygen of publicity, it may struggle to achieve the sales its greatness deserves. I keep coming back to it in a bid to find flaws, because my enthusiasm is of such giddiness as to sugest unreliability. Is Russel Searle’s voice too fey, or the faux-naivety of his Jarvis Cocker-like. love-gone-wrong lyrics overegged? Is the production (by Tortoise’s John McEntire) and instrumentation (toytown casio organ, toppy drums) insufficiently varied? Are the voices of the bassist, Georgia Lashbrook, and the drummer, Sarah Williams, underused? Sorry, but no to all those. Listen to twisted pop songs such as ‘I Love You, But…, the caustic kiss-off of When You Get Home or the shattering, a cappella closer, Splitting Hairs, and see if you can find a flaw.
