I picked this story up from ConservativeHome where it emerges that the photographers behind this amazing photograph of Dave Cameron's Oxford days in the allegedly elite dining society, The Bullingdon Club, have announced they will refuse copyright permission for reproductions of the picture.
According to the ConservativeHome author:
"The photographers insist that they were not pressurised into making the decision but took the decision on commercial grounds. I guess someone paid them a lot of money to withdraw it from circulation."
If this is the case then you wonder what the logic was behind that move. Surely not web-supremo Steve Hilton? He must understand that once images like this are online and in the public domain there's not much that realistically can be done to put a stop to its dissemination.
Not only that but it will hang around on websites and be instantly findable using a search engine. Making this move will surely only add to the furore and bring the picture to the attention of more people.
I suppose I'm breaching copyright rules (and the CIPR's social media guidelines?). So is CH and... oh yes, the Wikipedia entry on The Bullinghdon Club also links to the pic.
Anyway, I quite like the get-up... it was the 80s after all. ; )
*UPDATE*: The story is now on the BBC
